{"id":883,"date":"2010-05-26T11:50:46","date_gmt":"2010-05-26T17:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/?p=151"},"modified":"2010-05-26T11:50:46","modified_gmt":"2010-05-26T17:50:46","slug":"here-come-the-freshmen-to-c-i-t","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rglongpre.ca\/pilgrim\/index.php\/2010\/05\/26\/here-come-the-freshmen-to-c-i-t\/","title":{"rendered":"Here Come the Freshmen To C.I.T."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2006-september-134.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-152\" title=\"2006 September 134\" src=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2006-september-134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2006-september-134.jpg\"><\/a>The freshmen have arrived on campus! \u00a0These photos were taken in September, 2006 when we first saw university freshmen do military training on campus.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of their university career, all freshmen students are required to participate in military training exercises on campus for two weeks. \u00a0This happens all over China, not just on the C.I.T. campuses in Changzhou. \u00a0 As I watched the students parade and chant, I thought of cadet camps in Canada where similar things happen. \u00a0Of course, I asked the junior and senior students I was teaching at the time about what I was seeing. \u00a0They had some interesting things to tell me. \u00a0In the end, it was all about team-building and pride in country more than it was about military training.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2006-september-139.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-153\" title=\"2006 September 139\" src=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2006-september-139.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a>Students are assigned to a cohort upon entry at the university. \u00a0Each cohort had about fifty students. \u00a0Typically this cohort sticks together throughout their university career with all taking the same classes at the same time with the same teacher. \u00a0For programs in smaller colleges within a university these &#8220;class&#8221; cohorts could be half that size.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2006-september-132.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-154\" title=\"2006 September 132\" src=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2006-september-132.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a>Of course the idea of class cohorts is one that is familiar to North American universities, especially in specialized fields, yet the cohesiveness of the cohorts is more restrictive, at least at C.I.T. \u00a0There is little room for elective courses. \u00a0If choice for an elective is offered, the cohort makes a choice, not the individual.<\/p>\n<p>With two weeks of endless marching in both rain and sunshine, the freshmen pack away their fatigues and begin their classes. \u00a0With the two weeks of marching, singing, crawling and chanting done, the classmates and dormitory mates have become members of a team. \u00a0Going to school in a strange city where one doesn&#8217;t know anyone else now isn&#8217;t such a lonely adventure. \u00a0Again, something to think about.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The freshmen have arrived on campus! \u00a0These photos were taken in September, 2006 when we first saw university freshmen do military training on campus.
