{"id":83,"date":"2010-05-10T12:39:57","date_gmt":"2010-05-10T18:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/?p=83"},"modified":"2010-05-10T12:39:57","modified_gmt":"2010-05-10T18:39:57","slug":"preconceived-ideas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rglongpre.ca\/pilgrim\/index.php\/2010\/05\/10\/preconceived-ideas\/","title":{"rendered":"Preconceived Ideas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2006-august-095.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-84\" title=\"2006 August 095\" src=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/2006-august-095.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the first full day in Changzhou, we decided to go walking around what would become our neighbourhood. \u00a0Below our apartment in Sunshine Gardens &#8211; \u9633\u5149\u82b1\u56ed , at street level, shops line the roadways giving people a seemingly endless array of choices for shopping for goods and services. \u00a0Our first walk didn&#8217;t take us too far, as we were interested in everything we saw rather than covering a lot of distance.<\/p>\n<p>A few blocks away from the apartment, we came upon an open door which led to what we assumed was a temple. \u00a0The photo taken above of that location shows an altar of sorts with incense and a statue of Buddha. \u00a0After taking the photo, we decided against entering the temple as we were unsure of what was appropriate. \u00a0Little did we know that this wasn&#8217;t a temple at all, but simply the entrance to a drapery shop. \u00a0Little shrines and Buddhas and other symbols of prosperity were soon found in many shops. \u00a0Needless to say we were surprised at the presence of what we took as religious symbols in a country we had been taught had done away with religion. \u00a0It seemed as though all of our preconceptions were being shattered in a hurry. \u00a0What we discovered was a place and a people that was less forbidding, a friendly place.<\/p>\n<p>I will continue with presenting a few Chinese expressions that you will find useful if you ever travel to China, even if you have no intention of becoming an English teacher there. \u00a0 Just a reminder, you can listen to the Chinese pronunciation of these expressions by clicking on the little icon of a &#8220;speaker&#8221; &#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/audio.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"audio\" src=\"http:\/\/laowaiteacher.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/audio.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" \/><\/a> <\/strong>that follows the expression or word.
