Coffee Plantation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08777.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-642\" title=\"DSC08777\" src=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08777.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>The mountains around San Jose are the main production area for coffee in Costa Rica. \u00a0This is how it looked about 30 kilometres away from the city as we went to a coffee plantation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08735.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-644\" title=\"DSC08735\" src=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08735.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a>This is the coffee plantation we visited early in the morning. \u00a0First on the agenda was a good breakfast and some savouring of various coffee blends from the estate. \u00a0Once the breakfast was done then it was off to begin the tour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08783.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-643\" title=\"DSC08783\" src=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08783.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a>Of course Maureen got a turn at picking some of the coffee beans, well berries or cherries actually. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think that she would make a good living at it as the work is done on the steep sides of the mountains. \u00a0It&#8217;s hard to pick and keep one&#8217;s balance as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc01510.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-637\" title=\"DSC01510\" src=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc01510.jpg?w=225\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>We then toured the processing area which included an area where the beans are sun dried for eight hours before being dried in drums for a while longer. \u00a0I got to check out the actual beans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08769.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"DSC08769\" src=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08769.jpg?w=286\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The tools that the workers used to turn the beans drying in the sun was a strange looking wooden rake of sorts. \u00a0Besides the picking of the berries, this was the only part of the process that wasn&#8217;t mechanized.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08744.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"DSC08744\" src=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08744.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Needless to say, I found other photos to take besides the coffee production photos.<\/p>\n<p>This is a bird of paradise (I think) that I found next to the small plantation museum.<\/p>\n<p>We also found another flower that is a cousin of this one. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08742.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-638\" title=\"DSC08742\" src=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08742.jpg?w=250\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>I was told twice by our guide what it is called in Latin, but I forgot almost as soon as I was told.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08747.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-640\" title=\"DSC08747\" src=\"http:\/\/saskatchewangypsy.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/dsc08747.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>And finally, the coffee berries themselves. \u00a0The red berries are the ones that are considered the best. \u00a0Too dark and they aren&#8217;t very good. \u00a0Green berries are even worse.<\/p>\n<p>Well, enough for this post. \u00a0The next post will feature more of day two in San Jose area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mountains around San Jose are the main production area for coffee in Costa Rica. \u00a0This is how it looked about 30 kilometres away from the city as we went to a coffee plantation.
