My wife was commenting about how I am shrinking in many areas whereas my stomach seems to be getting bigger. My body weight hasn’t changed, so it isn’t about my over-eating. Since my wife works in a nursing home taking care of seniors during their last years, she tells me it is a matter of getting older. It isn’t that I couldn’t become trimmer, eat less, and do all manner of gymnastics in hopes of looking fitter and younger. The truth is I eat well and get a lot of walking exercise, as well as other things to keep myself active. The question is do I want to work hard to change how I look? And if so, why?
I took the above photo this morning for a different reason and saw that in spite of sucking in my gut a bit, I did have a belly that wasn’t representative of how I looked when I was younger. I took this second photo for a different project and realised that I needed it here to talk about being honest with oneself, with myself. There was no sucking in the gut and this is what I saw. I am not ashamed of being seen nude as my readers here have long ago come to realise. Nor am I ashamed to display my scars and wrinkles and spots that come with growing older. Yet, when I see this image, I know that there is something in me that wants me to take a bit better care of my body. The past few weeks have been a time for little exercise, almost no walking, and often eating fast food as I travelled from city to city selling books.
But, immediately upon noting this, I know that I will focus more on body and mind health than upon appearances. However, like everyone else, I am a bit vane when it comes to how I look. With that said, I will be a bit more careful in treating my body with respect.
Hi Robert,
Walking is a great exercise but does do much for core conditioning which is what is giving you your belly. I know this because I need to do the same thing. I also need to lose more weight. I’ve lost 40 lbs. in the past 18 months and working on losing another 50. I’ve been lucky that so far just moderating my eating habits gave me the weight loss. I’ll need to add exercise to achieve my goal.
Thanks, Greg. I have been steady at 172 pounds for more than 10 years with just occasional blips in both directions. I agree with walking doing little for core strength. Using walking poles does make a difference in posture and upper body strength. I do need to be more attentive to some work with exercises and the use of weights to improve core body strength. I hope the AGM went well while I was busy selling books. Just as an added note, I picked up the earbuds from the post office today. Thanks.
Before I was sick three years ago I was 53 and I was getting much heavier. In all honesty, I was a foodie. My weight was close to 180lbs and my waist was inching past 34″.
I decided to make changes by going to the gym every morning provided at my workplace but it didn’t seem to make much difference so I resigned myself to say it was due to ageing.
Now, 2-1/2 years since my tongue cancer syrgery and gruelling radiation treatment I am now as thin of when I was in high school only taller. 124lbs with a 28 waist.
It’s not for lack of trying to eat everything I can but my staple is Boost or Ensure which basically helps for getting the nutrition I can’t consume through proper eating.
You shouldn’t feel bad about how you look, ( you look fine btw) the main thing is to eat healthily and from what you have said, you’re on the right track!
All the best,
Fabien
I agree with you Fabien, eating healthy and taking care of the body is the best one can do. Considering that I am 70 years old, I am likely going to shrink in height as well as weight as part of the natural regression that comes with aging. But, that is at least 20 years into the future. LOL!
This time I disagree with you, Robert. You are very fit. All men even being fit we have some belly, but if it is a “small belly” like your case it does not mean you are fat. You look very healthy, and more considering your age. I would say your weight is perfect
I always say that all naked bodies are beautiful, no matter the age, size, weight,… In your case it is clear that it is beautiful, and the quality of your pictures enhances its beauty.
In listening to my body, I could be more fit. Thanks David.
