A New Laptop and the Same Naturist

On the road to get my laptop

Yes, the new laptop has arrived. One of the things that I had to come to grips with as I shift from old to new is the loss of programs that are no longer supported by Microsoft and Windows. I immediately noticed this when it came to dealing with photos. Now I have to find a simple and basic photo editor to download. I don’t like GIMP. Perhaps I’ll just re-buy Photoshop Elements for more detailed editing and Photoshop Express for basic use. I am open to listening to any of your suggestions.

I have set Microsoft Office to the side in favour of using Libre Office which has the save as Word documents, or PDF documents. I like the feel and like the price even better. No more annual fee to Microsoft … at least that is my hope. Now, I also have to find video editing and a decent audio editing software as I want to add audio books versions of my books to the sales platform. It’s going to be a process, perhaps a long one to get what I want and need on the new laptop.

Obviously, I am glad that I am not being held hostage by the older laptop which had slowed to a snail’s pace. The ease with which the new laptop is reacting at fast speeds is impressive. The only thing is, the owner of the laptop is not quite as fast as the computer. Like the now banished laptop, I am old and much slower, even the thinking process is slower. I need to sit still for longer periods of time for ideas to come forward. And, as in the past, this older version of me needs to be nude, preferably outdoors such as this photo taken this morning as the first of the sun’s rays touched my garden.

Robert, your blog this morning inspires my sympathy on a number of levels. For one thing, I am not facile in the world of computers and mobile phones, and the announcement that my i-phone has been upgraded overnight alone inspires terror at the prospect of a loss of communication. I don’t relish the thought of replacing my computer, however many head-aches it gives me, and having to deal with any number of even minor upgrades in word processing programs makes me want to see if I couldn’t find a way to resurrect my faithful old Smith Corona electric typewriter. But then, what would I do for e-mail?

At least yo u do have the garden, where naked coffee in the morning sun and air gives you what I presume to be a delightful pause before going back to tackle cybernetic “progress” ….

LOL! I love the way your words paint such a vivid picture. Trying to save the old laptop using a metaphorical AED in between time on the new laptop and “me” time.

    Hello Robert,
    Here are some suggestions.

For basic photo/image editing, I use FastStone Image Viewer. I’ve been using it since Windows Vista. Also, it’s free.

I am also looking for video editing software, just like you. I’ve narrowed down my list to these two websites.

Even though I’m leaning more to Windows Movie Maker, I need to find one that works also in a Linux OS.

Good luck in your search. Hope this helps.

Hi Eric, I will try out the photo editor that you mention. Movie Maker I have used, but with this new Laptop, I don’t seem to be able to find it, or find a download for it either. Loss of support from Windows? Thanks.

    Hi Robert,
Windows Movie Maker has been discontinued by Microsoft.

I just learned that the Photo app in Win 10 has video capabilities
and it’s what Microsoft is encouraging everybody to use.

Nonetheless, If you’re still interested in using Windows Movie Maker, here’s the link:

    web.archive.org/web/20170112124505/http:/wl.dlservice.microsoft.com/download/C/1/B/C1BA42D6-6A50-4A4A-90E5-FA9347E9360C/en/wlsetup-all.exe
Archive.org archived the download page and file before Microsoft removed it from their website.

This is Windows Essentials. Windows Movie Maker is one of several apps/programs in it. You don’t need to install everything in it.
If you are unsure of the integrity of the file, I suggest you upload the file and have it scanned through http://www.virustotal.com

Thanks Eric. I am going through the process of downloading it. I will likely report back later.
