Hole in the wall
While visiting other expats who are building their new home in Mexico, I noticed a designed hole, one of several in the wall along a patio, that looked to the outside world. Their home is a private world with high walls to keep the messy world at bay. In a way, it reminds me of how we build walls around ourselves to protect ourselves, walls that serve as a mask, a persona. Others come to know us in a controlled manner, thinking that we are the mask, the persona. But in every mask we hide behind, there are holes which allow the outer world to come in, even if only by slowly seeping in. And in this way, cracks begin to appear in the mask and we begin to suffer. The more we have bought in to our own myth we have created, the more we suffer. In the end, the mask shatters and the messiness of our inner, repressed self comes rushing out to join the outer messy world.
